Craig Montana
Craig is located
halfway between Helena and Great Falls on I-15. A
small unincorporated community of 40+ year 'rounders.
Craig is home to three fly shops, 1 restaurant, and 1
bar. The closest gas/convenience store is 5 miles
to the south in Wolf Creek, and the closest grocery
store is 25 miles north in Cascade.
Originally, Wolf Creek seemed to be the center of
angling activity on the 'Mo, but Craig has
displaced it over the years. Craig's proximity to
the river, beautiful scenery, and shops and services
make it the place to hang your hat while visiting the
area. Lodging is limited in the area, so always
make you reservation far in advance. A rental car
is always suggested when staying along the river.
Most of the mountainous land in the area is private, and
Craig is not a destination for hiking or hunting because
of this. Surrounded by several very large ranches,
hunters who gain permission on private land do very
well. Waterfowl hunting along the river is very
good, and there is some limited upland hunting in the
immediate area.
Holter Lake is just upstream of Craig and is a beautiful
place to take a drive or go boating. A highly
regarded Rainbow Trout and Walleye fishery in the Lake
draws many anglers from Central Montana. Scenic
boat tours in the "Gates of the Mountains" are available
daily.
Nightlife in Craig is much better than you might
imagine, that is to say, it exists.
Izaak's serves
excellent meals and has a great wine selection.
The ballgame is usually on, lots of lies are told, and a
great staff will make for a great time. If you're
lucky, you may even talk Wayne the bartender into
blowing your mind with some of his "slight of hand"
magic tricks.
Joe's Bar...what can you say? Famous for the many
bras that adorn the face of the building, Joe's has an
almost cult-like following, and is a great place to sit
back and
watch the locals mix with "dudes" from the city.
Great juke-box, and the only pool table in Craig.
